General Dentistry: Root Canal, Orthodontics, and More
Orthodontics
Crooked teeth can affect your appearance and cause oral health complications. A misaligned bite can place excessive strain on your jaw joints, increasing your risk for developing TMJ disorder. Dental misalignment can also make proper hygiene difficult. We offer Invisalign®, a treatment that can straighten your teeth and correct overbites, underbites, and other issues using a series of custom-made, clear aligner trays. The aligners are comfortable and virtually unnoticeable to those around you.
Root Canal Therapy
If you have a tooth affected by advanced decay, it can cause immense discomfort. If left untreated, it may require extraction. With root canal therapy, Dr. Hughes can save the healthy part of your tooth and eliminate the need for extraction. He will remove all infected tissue from within the tooth, sterilize the empty pulp chamber, and fill your tooth with a soft rubber compound. A dental crown is usually the final step in the process.
Periodontal Care
Bacteria and plaque can accumulate below the gum line, causing the gums to bleed, form pockets, and other symptoms. This condition is known as gum disease, and it can have a serious effect on your overall dental and physical health. In fact, periodontal disease is one of the most common causes of tooth loss. Dr. Hughes offers both preventative and remedial treatment for gum disease. He will patiently and respectfully explain his treatments so you understand their benefits, and how to maintain oral health between checkups. Dr. Hughes also offers gingivectomy for advanced cases of gum disease.
TMJ Treatment
TMJ disorder (TMD) can occur when your jaw joints, or TMJs, become damaged or inflamed. It sometimes occurs because of a misaligned bite. Dr. Hughes goes the extra mile when treating this condition. He will start with oral splints, like those used in sleep apnea treatment. He can also use physical therapy, and he can work with your physician to determine the cause of your condition. In some cases, he may refer you to a specialist for treatment.
Sleep Apnea
It is normal for your throat muscles and soft palate to relax during the night. For those who suffer with sleep apnea, these tissues can block the airways. As a result, you may wake briefly dozens of times throughout the night, and you may suffer chronic exhaustion. Dr. Hughes can treat the condition with custom-made oral appliances. These splints fit over your teeth to reposition your soft tissues. For complex cases, Dr. Hughes can work in conjunction with other doctors to find a solution.
Preventive Dentistry
Good preventative care is the foundation of oral health. You should schedule an exam and cleaning every six months. During these visits, our hygienist will clean your teeth, and Dr. Hughes will conduct a thorough checkup. He will look for signs of decay, as well as signs of gum disease and oral cancer. In addition to checking your gums, he will examine your head, neck, and scalp.
Sedation Dentistry
If you suffer from dental anxiety, or if you are preparing for an extensive procedure, Dr. Hughes offers dental sedation to help you relax during treatment. We offer oral conscious sedation, which involves taking a prescribed pill, as well as nitrous oxide (laughing gas). Dr. Hughes will help you choose the right sedation option for your needs. In rare cases, he may recommend hypnosis or cognitive therapy.
