Dr. Hughes explains the advantages of different types of dental fillings. He offers both metal and tooth-colored fillings. He can also replace old amalgam fillings for a more aesthetic restoration that will last for years with proper care.
The dental fillings are used to, here again, restore the tooth back to normal form and function. They don’t always look as nice as an actual tooth. The newer materials that we have, composite resins, they work very, very well. They look like a natural tooth structure. We still use silver as a great restoration, works very nicely. Some people call them amalgam. We still have gold fillings. They work nicely too and it’s just here, again, to fight the ravages of dental decay. We use fillings to fill that option.
There are times when patients desire to have an old filling removed. Let’s say an old silver filling may tarnish a tooth or whatever, and we can replace that with a tooth-colored filling material naturally sculpted so it’s contoured like an actual tooth and actually select the shade of the resin material. So it blends in nicely and it looks as natural and pleasing as possible.
